Let's go !

Activities

Hiking

Hiking

The campiste is situated right on the Petit Balcon Nord, the main East/West walking track that goes from Le Tour, at the Eastern end of the valley, all the way down to Chamonix. This trail links up with many other's, enabling you to get to the Glacier d'Argentiere, Lac Blanc, the Mer de Glace etc straight from the campsite, without even having to open your car door! The Chamonix Valley has over 350 km of superbly maintained trails, with itineries available, adaptable to all. For those doing the Tour du Mont Blanc, the campsite is situated right on the route of the GR5. Ordnance Survey Hiking maps can be bought from reception.

Climbing, Via Ferrata, Bouldering

Climbing, Via Ferrata, Bouldering

As well as its mountaineering, there are also some spectacular climbing walls and some supreme bouldering sites, all around the valley. If it is your first time, kit can be rented and lessons organised. There is also an indoor climbing wall in Les Houches for the (Very rare!!) times it rains. Passy, about a 20 mins drive away, has some enthralling Via Ferrata, and Servoz, about 15 mins drive, also has a new Via Ferrata set up, which is proving very popular.

Cycling

Cycling

Every year, the Tour de France comes within reaching distance of Chamonix. The number of supporters who go to watch is proof of the popularity of the sport in the valley. If tight lycra and burning thighs is your thing, there are, unsurprisingly, some phenomenal rides around Chamonix. The Col de Montets, leading into the Col de Forclaz over to Martigny is a classic, and covers two countries in one day, or if you are feeling slightly more masochistic, the Col de Grande St Bernard should finish you off nicely.

Parapenting

Parapenting

Experienced paragliders will appreciate the lift system that provides easy access to the multiple take-off points around the valley. One of them is the Aiguille du Midi, providing a take-off height of 3842m. Tandem flights can be booked from around 100 €, and courses organised if you want to learn to fly yourself.

Mountaineering

Mountaineering

The Chamonix Valley offers some of the best and most sought after opportunities for mountaineering in the world. The summits of the Mont Blanc massif attract mountaineering enthusiasts from all over the globe, since they were first conquered by Jacques Balmat and Michel G. Paccard in the late 18th century. There are high mountain routes in Chamonix that can be enjoyed by mountaineers of all different fitness and experience levels, from first timers, to those wishing to follow in the fabled footsteps of some of the most famous mountaineering legends that have made Chamonix their own.

Mountain Biking, Road cycling

Mountain Biking, Road cycling

After many years watching from afar, Chamonix has caught onto Mountain Biking in a big way, making the most of the unbeatable natural terrain for both cross country and downhill mountain biking. New, purpose-built downhill tracks built in La Flegere and Vallorcine are not for the fainthearted. Les Houches, has a wide variety of tracks suitable for all ages and levels with some unendingly fun and imaginitive northshore sections.

White Water Rafting, Canyoning

White Water Rafting, Canyoning

The fast water and glacial streams of the Mont Blanc Massif provide masses of opportunities for those who like their entertainment slightly wetter (And a little colder). Rafting wise, the river Arve, which runs straight down the Chamonix Valley is a decent level 2 river, and is great for kids and first timers. La Dora Baltea, about 20 mins drive from Chamonix, through the Mont Blanc Tunnel and into the Aosta Valley, is an adrenaline pumping level 5 river, and can be booked with a lunch in a tasty Italian Restorante. Canyoning entails leaping into mountain torrents, abseiling down waterfalls and whooshing along solid rock water slides. Basically, a natural Disney Land, and well worth it.
